Interview Adrie van der Poel believes that Mathieu van der Poel can improve even further in the coming weeks. Van der Poel Senior points out that Mathieu is still preparing for the away season. “I definitely think he can reach last year’s level on the road,” he said CyclingFlits.
When we ask Adrie how he has seen the last few weeks, he is clear. “I think it speaks for itself. We knew that Mathieu was really good physically. Maybe not 100% yet, but the last few percent are the hardest to achieve. In addition, he is also technically at a fairly high level. That also contributed to his We who won seven crosses.”
“How important is it that he no longer has back problems? I don’t hear him talking about it, whereas that was the case all the time last year. But these are actually things we leave alone. And we don’t really want to talk about it. Look, as a driver you always feel something. It’s just fine at the moment.”
Even better in the street season
With the victory in Baal, Van der Poel achieved eight wins in eight games. His standard is exceptionally high, but with a view to the road season there is still room for improvement. “A few percent, I think. It is also still under construction. Perhaps he is a little more advanced in his development (than the opposition, editor’s note). This also ensures that he has a good foundation and can continue to build on it. There are still a few options, especially because the training work for the away season is completely different.”
“I assume that he can reach last year’s level on the road. But of course nothing can go wrong. Last year the coin often fell on its side. On the other hand, you also enforce it yourself. I think he just took a lot of confidence with him from last year. That’s important and I think he wants to build on that now.”
