American actor Shia Labeouf, confident in his latest role in the cassock of Padre Pio, the Italian priest canonized by John Paul II, has contacted the Franciscan Capuchins of California and plans to become a deacon.
A new role for Shia Labeouf. The American actor had an epiphany after playing Abel Ferrara, the Italian priest Padre Pio canonized by John Paul II, in the 2022 film of the same name.
So much so that he has become closer to the community of Franciscan Capuchins in California and has just received the sacrament of Confirmation, as the religious announced on January 2 on Facebook, who are happy that the actor is “in a profound Engaged in spirituality.” A journey that led him to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church.”
“The Capuchin Franciscan brothers are pleased to welcome him among them”
“We are pleased to announce that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf fully entered the Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation this past weekend! The Capuchin Franciscan Brothers are pleased to welcome him into their midst and to witness his deep commitment to his journey of faith.” they also wrote.
The actor would even consider becoming a deacon, according to Father Rodriguez, sponsor of his confirmation, the agency said Catholic News Agency. The religious also explains that it was his role in Padre Pio that inspired this idea.
According to the Catholic Church’s definition, a deacon is a “married or single man who has answered a call of the Catholic Church to be a sign of service.”
Shia Labeouf, raised Jewish and Catholic – between a Jewish mother and a Pentecostal father – testified in a 2004 book entitled “I am a Jew” along with other personalities who spoke about what it means to them to be a Jew.
However, in 2007, the actor confided in an interview that he had his bar mitvah at the age of 13 but also got baptized.
Bar Mitzvah at 1 p.m
“I had a bar mitzvah and was baptized. I did them for both sides. This shows how funny both sides are. Religion is funny. If it gives people hope, it makes sense. But it never made sense to me.”
Since then, Shia Labeouf has visibly changed his mind. Back in 2014, he assured Interview Magazine that he had “found God” while filming the film “Fury” with Brad Pitt. He played a character named Boyd “Bible” Swan.
“I really became a Christian, and I’m not kidding. I could have just recited the prayers that were on the page. But it was a real thing that really saved me.”
