If the history of life on Earth were condensed into 24 hours, multicellular organisms would have emerged twelve hours ago, dinosaurs an hour ago, the first humans appeared 40 seconds ago – and modern humans, with all their technology and civilization, exist for less than a whole second. I read that somewhere.
Bert Stankowski, Weisslingen.
I see this as a valuation of what we mean to the earth. A flea on an elephant’s collar. Unfortunately, fleas have an annoying habit: they multiply almost endlessly. The same can be said with a clear conscience about people.
When I plan my allotment for next year, I will build on my experiences. I’ve been looking after my planting site since 2005 and don’t know much more than I did back then when I wanted to make something clever out of overgrown, weedy beds. I’ve decided again: In the spring I’ll tackle it again and do something new. It will be different, better and more lucrative: less lettuce, more carrots, peas again and lots of potatoes. And no beans, the freezer is full of them from the last three years.
When it comes to greens, I am self-sufficient. But I’m not efficient. When the lettuce is cheapest in Migros, the supply of zucchini in the Coop is excessive and the other cheap suppliers put strawberries on sale on the market, the yields on my beds are ready to be harvested. No, that’s not efficient.
On the other hand, I’m sure that my haul hasn’t been sprayed with all sorts of poisonous water. In addition to my own compost, I only used a little purchased organic fertilizer – and the lettuce is almost still alive when it comes to the table.
How long a lettuce lives
Have you ever asked yourself: “Is the lettuce still alive after you cut it?” Nobody could give me a sure answer yet.
Experts say: Once cut off, the lettuce is no longer alive. Plant tissue dies when it is cut off from its supply of water and nutrients. Although some plants live for a short time after being cut, this is not the case with lettuce.
After harvesting it begins to wilt. It no longer receives water and nutrients. To get the nutritional benefits and best taste, fresh lettuce should be consumed quickly. But what about peas and beans?
So: Good luck and have fun planning. I will continue!
