This Christmas, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU) released a video documenting the alleged destruction of a Russian T-90M tank with their FPV drone. This is one of many proofs of the effective use of UAVs on the Ukrainian battlefield.
The video shows a T-90M Proryv-3 tank driving through a snowy landscape. Suddenly an explosion is seen at the front of the tank in front of its turret. The tank continues straight ahead for a while and then turns into the adjacent forest. The uncontrollable rotation of the turret shows that the machine is beyond the control of the crew. After a few more meters the whole machine stops and one and later two more Russian soldiers jump out. Smoke rises from the tank and the interior appears to have been hit and may be catching fire.
According to the ZSU, the explosion at the front of the tank was caused by a reconnaissance drone with explosives attached. This is a very effective technique that makes it possible to destroy larger and more expensive military equipment for a low cost of the drone. It was first used by Ukrainian troops during the war in Ukraine, but today it is also a common practice of the Russian army. A similar technique of using FPV drones has also been observed in recent weeks when Israeli forces have fought terrorist groups in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

FPV drones are equipped with a camera that is remotely connected to the operator’s special glasses. This sees the space around the drone from its perspective and can then attack the selected target very precisely. In addition, the technology of the drone and its ammunition is constantly changing, which further increases the effectiveness of this fast weapon. Furthermore, the video shows that Small drones can already cope with the pride of Russian tank technology, that is, with the T-90M model. The drone also hit the front part, where the tank has the strongest armor. Therefore, the operator must have hit the area between the turret and the hull and probably reached the crew compartment.
The T-90M tank is currently considered Russia’s most advanced main battle tank. The T-90M, also called Proryv-3, is based on the T-72 and T-80 models and is manufactured by Uralvagonzavod. The original machine was primarily developed in the 1990s (Although the first prototypes were presented in 1988), the model was gradually modernized due to its use in the fighting in Syria. The tank is equipped with a 125mm main gun designated 2A46M-5, which is automatically loaded and whose accuracy is ensured by an electronic fire control system.
