Denmark’s 83-year-old Queen Margaret announced in her New Year’s speech that she would like to hand over rule to the next generation. After the Queen’s abdication, her 55-year-old son Frederik became the country’s monarch, with his wife, the new queen and the Australian Mary Donaldson, sitting at his side. Frederik took over the regency last week on January 14th, the day of celebrations for Margarete’s 52nd accession to the throne.
Report on the departure of Margaret II in favor of her first-born son, now known as Frederik
According to the Crown’s statement, health problems were the sole and sufficient reason for the abdication, so serious that they prevented Margaret from continuing to fulfill the royal agenda.

However, it is possible that another factor played a significant role in their decision – rumors of infidelity between the former crown prince and his fifty-one-year-old wife, Australian Mary Donaldson, which arose in early autumn 2023 and took drastic proportions, reducing Frederik’s popularity himself, as he had already suffered from the scourge of the Danish people for a long time.
Due to his penchant for fast driving and the most rebellious nature of the entire family, he has been given the unflattering nickname “Turbo Prince” in the past.
According to Danish inheritance law, the rightful heir to the throne is the first child born from a royal marriage. Frederik is destined to take on his mother’s role from an early age.
In view of the scandals surrounding the future king, it would be unwise for Markéta II to endanger the continued existence of the monarchy in Denmark. She remained on the throne until her death, risking increasing the party’s doubts about her son’s suitability to represent the country, although she preferred to retire early and ensure that the scepter remained unchallenged in the family stayed.
After fifty-two years, the world’s longest-reigning queen and the only reigning queen with inheritance rights abdicated so that Frederik and his wife Mary Donaldson could take the throne.
Therefore, the divorce will not take place. Rumors about the couple’s crisis are dispelled. Because what better way to silence bad news than to cover it up with good news about the protagonists?
The public’s focus is now on the young ruling generation, along with the new Crown Prince Christian, the current monarch’s firstborn son, and Frederik and Mary’s remaining three children, Princesses Isabella, Vincent and Josephine. And perhaps one more little thing: the new redistribution of royal salaries.
A king’s reward
At the coronation, Frederik The king inherits the same rights and obligations, but at the same time the contractual relationships are adjusted.
Although the Danish royal family’s budget has been regulated by law since 2001, its wording is set to change with the coronation of Frederik of Denmark. However, such a step is decided by the government and must be approved by the Danish Parliament.
Queen Margaret II received a royal salary of twelve million euros a year. However, this does not mean that the entire amount would be transferred directly to your private account. From this sum, the costs of maintaining the royal property, state visits, staff salaries, banquets, wardrobe and other expenses were deducted, as well as a share for her sister Benedikta (1.3 million euros).
It was also used to determine the salary for Frederik’s son as crown prince. The latter amounted to around three million euros per year, of which ten percent (around 300,000 euros per year) went to his wife, Princess Mary.
It is estimated that even after deducting all expenses, Markéta collected around 1.5 million euros per year, which she shared with her husband, Prince Henrik of Denmark, until his death in 2018. It was never known that the prince’s husband received his own salary.
After the abdication, the tables will now turn and Her Royal Highness Margaret of Denmark will receive a reduced pension, which she will henceforth receive from the hands of the reigning monarch. However, it will already be entirely for your personal use. If there is a significant reduction in official duties, this “salary” is likely to decrease, but the exact amount has not yet been announced.
Mary Donaldson, the world’s first Australian queen, will ascend the Danish throne as Queen Mary, the royal family confirmed in a statement. And she’s supposed to triple her current salary. The reason is said to be a higher number of official acts in the role of the queen consort.
If we calculate roughly, the increase could be around 800,000 euros per year if approved. With such an amount she would easily exceed the annual income of Queen Letizia of Spain of 148,105 euros and of Máxima of the Netherlands of 411,000 euros. In this case, Queen Mary will probably take the first place in the list of the highest paid monarchs in the world.
