“Human dignity also means wearing clean clothes, taking a shower, feeling similar to others, avoiding contemptuous looks at oneself,” the Vatican Charities Office continues its mission from these considerations. Its leader, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, traveled to Naples on January 12, where he opened a laundry and shower facility.

Similar initiatives have already been implemented in other Italian cities – Rome, Genoa and Turin. This time, with the support of the companies “Procter & Gamble”, “Haier Europe” and the municipality of St. Egidius, the laundry and shower for homeless people was also built further south. It is located in the center of Naples near the Church of Saints Philip and James.
Cardinal Krajewski emphasizes that “it is another opportunity to be present to wounded humanity and to show the closeness and presence of God to those who are considered the last.” More than 300 people gathered at the “Friendship House”, were previously on the street. Earlier this year, two homeless people died in Naples – one was the victim of a fire that broke out in a garage and the other died unnoticed near Plebiscite Square, where a concert was taking place.
“People forced to live on the streets mean a degradation of the city, but each of us is called to humanize our city according to our abilities,” says Antonio Matone, a representative of the Community of Saint Egidius. Community members ensure that Naples’ homeless people receive a daily portion of hot food and provide them with blankets in the winter.
