37.3 percent of Belgium’s residents have a migrant background. This means that either they, their parents or their grandparents originally lived in another country. For Brussels it is already 82.5 percent, in Antwerp 62 percent and in Ghent 41 percent. “Percentage figures that are invariably misused as evidence of the ‘population’,” says sociologist Jan Hertogen (76), who announced the figures. “But that’s nonsense: without this migration, you and I would be less wealthy and culturally poorer.”
