In the tenth game, Ostapenko won “dry” by serving her opponent and the score was 5-5.
In the tiebreak, which the Latvian tennis player started with a serve, the opponents scored with their serves until Ostapenko made it 4-3 in the seventh game with a shot from the unfavorable side of the court.
Ostapenko also won the next three games, the last of which came with a double fault from Alexandrova, and advanced to the final.
Alexandrova also committed more double faults throughout the game (6:4), although she hit the first serve on the court more often than Ostapenko (63.4%:55.3%).
However, Latvia’s first racket scored more points on both first (66.7%:51.1%) and second (52.9%:42.3%) serves.
Both tennis players had eight break points each, Ostapenko used five of them and Alexandrova used three.
Throughout the match, Ostapenko won 83 of 147 games.
The last time that Ostapenko fought in the final of a WTA tournament in singles was at the end of September 2022, at the Seoul “WTA 500” series tournament, with 6:7 (4:7), 0:6 directly against Alexandrova.
Ostapenko has a long history of playing with Alexandrova. Of the eight previously played matches, the player from Riga was superior in three, including winning the first round of the San Diego “WTA 500” series tournament last year. The most important mutual duel to date took place last year in the final of the “WTA 500” series tournament in Seoul, where the Latvian tennis player lost in three sets.
In the first round of the tournament, Ostapenko defeated the Romanian Sorana Cristea (WTA 26th) 2:6, 6:2, 6:4, in the second round she beat the French Caroline Garcia (WTA 20th) 6:4, 5: 7, 6-4 and in the quarterfinals she was superior to the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (WTA 41) with 7-5, 6-3. On her way to the semi-finals, Aleksandrova defeated Poland’s Magda Linet (WTA 24th) – 3-6, 7-6 (10:8), 7-5, Veronika Kudermetova (WTA 16th) – 6-4, 6-4 and Jelena represents Kazakhstan Ribakinu (WTA 3rd) – 6-3, 6-3.
Ostapenko took part in the WTA 500 Series tournament in Brisbane last week and reached the quarterfinals, but Alexandrova failed to make it past the first round.
Last year, Ostapenko lost in the first round of the Adelaide tournament, moving to within one point of the WTA rankings.
The Latvian tennis player also competed in the doubles tournament with her regular opponent Ludmila Kichenoka from Ukraine in Adelaide, but had to miss the court in the semi-finals on Thursday due to a defeat.
After the tournament in Adelaide, the tennis players will compete in the first “Grand Slam” tournament of the season – the Australian Open Championship – from January 14th to 28th.
