Police reported that people in Berlin threw fireworks at police officers, firefighters and each other and tried to make Molotov cocktails.
One of the incidents occurred on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, where around 500 people set off firecrackers. Police dispersed the group near the Neptune Fountain and checked them for pyrotechnic devices. But then a group of about 200 people began shooting fireworks at police, and police arrested several people.
In Berlin, around 45,000 people welcomed the year 2024 at the Brandenburg Gate.
In Frankfurt, Hamburg and elsewhere in Germany, the year 2024 was welcomed peacefully and without major incidents. However, an 18-year-old boy died in Koblenz when a firecracker exploded.
Due to suspicions of a possible terrorist attack in Cologne Cathedral, the police in Cologne were particularly vigilant. It has already been reported that three more people were arrested in Germany on Sunday in connection with the planned attack on Cologne Cathedral. They are said to be related to a Tajik citizen who was arrested on December 24th on suspicion of planning an attack on Cologne Cathedral.
Around 1,000 police officers ensured the security of Cologne Cathedral on Sunday evening.
