The opening ceremony on the banks of the Emajegi River gathered thousands of Tartu residents, guests and representatives of foreign media. 200 actors, dancers and musicians took part in the performance. The event’s visitors were addressed by Estonian President Alars Karis, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simsone and Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas.
Estonian President Alars Karis emphasized that Tartu has always been the center of Estonian culture and spiritual development: “I hope that the cultural and historical heritage of my hometown Tartu will help to powerfully carry the name of the European Capital of Culture to our region .” all of Estonia.”
In his speech, Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas referred to the former President of Estonia, Lenarts Meri:
“President Meri emphasized that a short but powerful word – ‘yes’ – is very important for the functioning of the European Union. By saying yes to diversity, we stand for strength. I believe that the Year of European Capital of Culture will positively unite Tartu and the South Estonia region.”
Urmas Klaas also highlighted the Tartu 2024 concept “Arts of Survival” (Art of survival), which is oriented towards the freedom and power of diversity.
Opening performance Tartu 2024 “Everything becomes one!” The main theme was communication and being together with loved ones. It also reflects Tartu’s past, present and future with dance, songs and visual art. In the show “Trad.Attack!”, popular in Estonia, Sanders Melders, Lonitsera and other musicians performed together with local residents of all ages.
