The change stems from the franchise and the quarterback missing the league‑mandated extension deadline. ESPN’s insider predicts the Buccaneers may still negotiate a new contract, while Yahoo Sports frames the move as a “massive risk” for both sides.

Exact timing of any renegotiation remains unconfirmed. Coverage notes that the missed deadline forces Mayfield to play out the final year of his contract, prompting speculation about his market value in 2027.

Yahoo Sports outlines six possible team fits, but offers no detail on interest from those clubs. The Buccaneers’ strategic plans beyond the free‑agent window have not been disclosed, leaving the franchise’s next quarterback move uncertain.
