The renovation of the Van Brienenoord Bridge in Rotterdam will be postponed for four years. Rijkswaterstaat announced this this morning. The Van Brienenoord Bridge, a bridge on the A16 over the Nieuwe Maas, is the busiest bridge in the Netherlands with more than 230,000 vehicles per day.

The bridge is now almost sixty years old and has therefore reached the end of its lifespan. The arches, the oldest bridge valve and the operating system require thorough maintenance.

Rijkswaterstaat launched a tender at the end of 2022. Only one party presented itself. Rijkswaterstaat says fewer and fewer contractors want to take on complex projects like this. This is due to increased construction costs and a tight labor market combined with higher risks on large projects.

Too risky and expensive

Rijkswaterstaat now says that during the process it became clear that the current plans were too risky and too expensive.

“Despite the efforts of all parties, we unfortunately cannot successfully tender this project in this form. Therefore, it was decided to stop the current tender for the Van Brienenoord Bridge and prepare a new tender in a different form,” Rijkswaterstaat said in a statement. .

The new plan should be ready next summer. Rijkswaterstaat calls this a major setback.

Higher chance of malfunctions

The postponement of maintenance means, among other things, that the bridge will be more susceptible to disruptions and other traffic disruptions in the coming years. “The longer you put off major maintenance work, the greater the chance that problems will arise,” a spokesperson told Rijnmond.

Rijkswaterstaat will “frequently monitor” the bridge in the coming years and promises to minimize the inconvenience.
