The meter-high statue of a urinating polar bear that had stood in Amersfoort since last summer was removed this morning.

This happened a few months later than originally planned:

The work of art on the quay in front of the Flehite Museum symbolizes the current climate problem. Climate activists have used the artwork several times in recent months to draw attention to climate change by dressing the polar bear with a suitcase and a banner. This also happened yesterday, on the last full day the polar bear was in the forest Pee canal.

The exhibition to which the artwork was part was on display until last November. The polar bear would also leave, but because many Amersfoort residents accepted the picture, the polar bear was allowed to stay a few months longer.

Urination ban

But there were also people who were less satisfied with the work of art. The residents were bothered by the noise, which could be heard day and night. The polar bear was therefore banned from urinating at night last August.

Today the polar bear returns to his owner, the artist Florentijn Hofman. He starts looking for a new, suitable place. According to RTV Utrecht, many Amersfoort residents hope that the statue will be placed elsewhere in the city.

“We will miss him,” says Annebeth Felet from the Flehite Museum. “We got so many nice reactions to it that it’s a shame that he’s leaving.” But saying goodbye is part of the museum. “Sometimes it’s necessary to make room for something new.”
