iPhone to change. Apple can’t get away with this anymore

According to the EU Digital Markets Act, the App Store usheri.e. “an important intermediary between companies and consumers for the core services of the platform”. Regulators are pressuring Apple to allow the installation of external applications on its iOS devices and to allow people to pay for these applications other than through the App Store (and this is not just a commission for Apple).

The EU has set a deadline for introducing changes: March 7, 2024. Will Apple do it? Right now he’s trying to avoid it.

An iPhone without borders is not a dream

Apple is resisting this idea and many suspect it will not meet EU requirements by early March. The company has already appealed the decision by EU regulators. She made an interesting argument. Well, the platform would be subject to and recognized as the Digital Markets Act usher Restriction of user freedom, 45 million people have to use it – that is one of the conditions. Apple claims that the App Store is not one, but five stores! Separately for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch and macOS. It is difficult to say whether the EU will accept this point of view and allow the store to maintain its monopoly only on, for example, watches.

Apple’s resistance is not surprising. The App Store is currently unrivaled and highly profitable. If an alternative emerges with more favorable app publishing policies (e.g. lower commission), developers may leave the App Store. This means fewer purchases through the Apple platform and less sales. The issue of user security is also important, but is certainly not as high a priority as money.

EU antitrust commissioner Margrethe Vestager met with Apple boss Tim Cook. She announced on Twitter that, among other things, they were discussing the distribution of iOS applications outside the App Store in the European Union.

Commissioner Vestager also spoke to American journalists and delivered a clear message: An objection is an objection, but Apple must comply within the deadline. The same applies to all other companies subject to the provisions of the Digital Markets Act. You can protest and challenge the EU regulations, but This does not release anyone from their obligation to comply with the regulation.
