Four medals for Belgium on the final day of the European Short Track Championships in Gdansk, Poland. Hanne Desmet easily won the gold medal in the 1000 meter run, while her brother Stijn took bronze in the same distance. A little later, Hanne and Stijn, together with Tineke, won the Dulk and Ward Pétré won bronze in the mixed relay. Stijn took the third medal an hour later, the Belgians took silver in the men’s relay.
After her bronze medal yesterday in the 500 meters and her unfortunate fall in the 1500 meters, Hanne Desmet took revenge in the 1000 meter run. In an unexciting final, Desmet won the gold medal through force majeure.
The 27-year-old convincingly won her second title in a row with a time of 1:33.675 ahead of the Dutch Selma Poutsma and Xandra Velzeboer.
Stijn Desmet wins four medals
Her brother Stijn Desmet won his second medal at the same distance at these European Championships in Gdansk, Poland. Like yesterday – over 500 meters – he had to be content with bronze.
The 25-year-old Desmet finished behind Italian Pietro Sighel and Briton Niall Treacy. Desmet was the defending champion at this distance.
About half an hour later, Belgium won again. Hanne and Stijn Desmet won the Dulk and Ward Pétré bronze in the mixed relay together with Tineke. The Belgians were in fourth place throughout the competition, but a crash by Italy gave Belgium the bronze medal. The gold went to the Netherlands, silver to the home country Poland.
And Stijn Desmet was still not satisfied. He also won a medal in the men’s relay. Together with Adriaan Dewagtere, Ward Pétré and Warre Van Damme he achieved silver after the Netherlands.
Belgium finished the European Championships with one gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
