Your car will soon adapt to the restrictions on its own: the intelligent speed limiter will be mandatory from July!

According to the Vias Institute, 15% of accidents with injuries in Belgium are due to excessive speed. “One in three fatal accidents can be attributed to excessive or inappropriate speed.”

This is why restrictions apply to your next car

Given this observation, the European Commission has been working in recent years on a project that still makes us wonder today why the idea did not come up earlier: that of a smart speed limiter that would allow reading the speed limit signs and automatically reduce the speed of the vehicle. So there is no longer any way to overcome the limitation “through distraction”.

The project was successful and from 2022 requires all new models to have the device called ISA (English acronym for Intelligent Speed Adjustment). Every manufacturer who wanted to bring a new model onto the market had to integrate the device. However, there was an error here: older models were not affected. And vehicles that leave the factory after 2022 but concern a model before 2022 could therefore drive without ISA. From July 7th, this will no longer be the case: the device will now be mandatory for all new cars placed on the market in the European Union.

Here we are: a black box installed in your car to spy on your driving

However, the system can be disabled at each startup using the dashboard controls. And for safety reasons, it is also automatically deactivated when the driver presses the accelerator hard, similar to cruise control. This system uses geolocation data and the recognition of traffic signs via cameras. In addition, it can also be used by the police to determine responsibility in a traffic accident, as the ISA system records all vehicle-related data (speed, braking, etc.).
