Frost makes the fight for the last beets particularly exciting
Farmers and contractors have been working hard in the last few days to get as many beets out of the ground as possible. “We worked with all our might and all possible creative solutions,” says Arno Huijsmans, director of agricultural affairs at Cosun Beet Company.
Cosun Beet Company does not yet know how many hectares of beets are still in the ground. An inventory inspection of the fields should give the processor a better insight into the area that still needs to be cleared.
There is no denying that things are going to be exciting for these beets. There aren’t many leaves left on most plots. “Last night it was about 3 degrees freezing. The coming nights will be harder: -8 and more wind. I can’t imagine there wouldn’t be frost damage.”
Push and pull
A lot has been done in the last few days to get as many beets out of the ground as possible: Farmers drive crawler cranes behind the harvester to push them, with tractors in front of the harvester or with a winch. In Drenthe, a farmer “shoveled” his beets (approx. 0.5 hectares) out of the soaking wet ground with a crane and loaded the harvest onto tipper trucks. According to Huijsmans, on clay soil it is still possible to move harvesters independently through the soil on caterpillar tracks.

In the hope
There are also some turnips on the pile. “The campaign still lasts 3.5 weeks, so there is still hope for at least 2.5 weeks.” Beets in the heap must be covered in good time, i.e. before frost. Covering with fleece alone is not enough to protect the beet pile from frost, warns the IRS.
