In recent years, films and series based on video games have become increasingly popular, after decades of films like Mortal Kombat: Annihilation or the Resident Evil series. Sony is one of the most active manufacturers in this regard, which is understandable given the large catalog of IPs the company owns. After seeing films like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as series like Twisted Metal and the highly acclaimed The Last of Us, Sony is planning an adaptation of Until Dawn, one of the most interesting “story games” of all time.
Until Dawn tells the story of eight young people who gather in a mountain hut when things get dangerous. It’s a horror game that puts the 8 in constant danger, and the story is dynamic so there are multiple ways to complete the game depending on the decisions you make along the way. This element also makes the idea of an adaptation of Until Dawn very interesting, because there are many directions the story can go. Several actors played the characters in “Until Dawn”, such as Hayden Panettiere, Jordan Fisher or even the Oscar winner for his performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Rami Malek. It remains to be seen whether any of them will also return to play their roles in the film.
Behind the camera is David F. Sandberg, director of Lights Out (yey) and Shazam! (ney), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sandberg has proven to be a good director, especially in the horror genre, so I’m relatively optimistic. The screenplay is being written by Sandberg and Gary Dauberman (Annabelle: Creation) from an original story by Blair Butler (The Invitation).
Sony is also preparing adaptations for Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon: Zero Dawn and God of War – the latter in collaboration with Amazon.
