Olympic Games in Paris
Of all the major events mentioned, it will be the last to begin. But it is the biggest sporting event of the year.
And the Czechs often did well at the Olympic Games. They finished a very respectable 18th place at Tokyo 2021 with four gold, four silver and three bronze medals. Previously in Rio de Janeiro there were ten medals but only one gold medal, which meant 43rd place in the national rankings.
How will we be in Paris? We can collect a few medals again, even if we make up for the previous 11 and especially the four gold medals from Tokyo, that would be a great achievement. It’s unlikely to happen again. Shooting, canoeing, tennis, men’s javelin and judo were to be the Czech medal disciplines.
Worth mentioning is javelin thrower Jakub Vadlejch, who has been in top form recently. Apparently he will once again be one of the favorites in Paris. Or great Czech tennis players, either in singles or doubles, although without the great couple Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková, who separated. Judoka Lukáš Krpálek is already a kind of Olympic component, just like whitewater fighters.
Our secret trump card is the world archery champion, Marie Horáčková. She should do her best in Paris. There is also the great men’s beach volleyball pair Ondřej Perušič and David Pigner, who won the World Championship this year.
World Ice Hockey Championships in Prague
Ice hockey in Prague will become a big Czech event and fans will want a medal. Simply because the last time we as a Czechoslovakia team were successful at home was in 1992, when we came third. Since then we have been fifth in 2004 and fourth in 2015.
The last time we were world champions was in Germany in 2010 and we won bronze in 2011, 2012 and 2022. It won’t be easy, but the good news is that the best Czech ice hockey players at the moment could have a huge interest in representing.
David Pastrňák is now shining at world level in the best NHL league in the world. Maybe a decent team could stand up to him. Defender Filip Hronka and strikers Tomáš Hertl and Martin Nečas are also doing well in America. There is also the experienced Roman Červenka and several other promising players from the NHL, national or European leagues. It’s just a shame for David Krejčí, who has already ended his career.
ME in football in Germany
This will be a big unknown, the tournament at the turn of June/July is still a long way off.
In 2004 we were third under Karl Brückner and even second in 1996 under Dušan Uhrin. We are high up in the historical table.
But it is difficult to draw conclusions for the year 2024. Furthermore, the Czech team is looking for a coach, which is certainly not a good thing at this point. Is there enough time for everything? An illusion…
The only slightly better news is that in the basic group we will face Portugal, Turkey and the winner of the play-offs, which will emerge from the foursome of Greece, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg.
What does that mean? Definitely an easier group. But on the other hand, no reason to celebrate. If we are not at our best, Portugal, Turkey and Greece can easily overtake us.
We also have some players at European level – Tomáš Souček, Vladimír Coufal, Patrik Schick and others… It is important that they do not get injured and are in top shape.
Biathlon World Championships in Vysočina
Perhaps the biggest lottery of all. It doesn’t look like a medal yet. At the same time, the Czechs are historically quite successful. This year they remained without a medal at the World Championships in Oberhof, but it was a “fous”. With fourth place in the men’s relay and fifth place for Markéta Davidová. However, in Pokljuka 2021, Markéta Davidová won gold in the long-distance race, and in Antholz 2020, Lucie Charvátová won two bronze medals in the sprint and mixed relay. The Czechs left Hochfilzen 2017 with one gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
Our team has not achieved any victories or podiums this season. At least he made it into the top ten a few times. Michal Krčmář is getting better from race to race. The girls attack the top ten. If only Markéta Davidová would manage to prevent the miserable shooting… But let’s stay as sober as possible. Unless a miracle happens, it doesn’t look like a medal.
