The World Health Organization (WHO) says coronavirus vaccines will save at least 1.4 million lives in the so-called “Working Area Europe”. The majority of people over sixty are still alive, reports state director Hans Kluge.

The Europe business area covers 53 countries. These are not only countries in Europe, but also a number of Central Asian countries such as Israel and Kazakhstan.

Corona vaccinations were essential to protect the weak, especially in the winter months, says Kluge. “The first boosters alone saved an estimated 700,000 lives.” According to him, it is “absolutely necessary” that people at risk continue to receive their corona and flu vaccinations.

According to the WHO, more than 277.7 million corona infections have been registered in the European area so far. More than 2.2 million people died.

According to Kluge, Europe must continue to invest in healthcare. “We may not be prepared for something unusual, such as the emergence of a new, more serious variant of the coronavirus or an as yet unknown pathogen.”
