If your auto mechanic is away or on vacation and you have a vehicle problem, it is important that you have some general ideas about how your car works. For example, what does a certain signal mean that can jump onto the board?

Although the dashboard is the easiest place to read the speedometer, oil and fuel levels, or turn the lights on and off, you can also see some calls for attention that need to be responded to, sometimes more urgently and others not so much.

What does the “Check engine” signal mean?

The check engine light is yellow, orange or red on most vehicles and, as the name suggests, suggests checking the engine. Such a recommendation can have different reasons.

If the light flashes, there is an urgent problem. However, if it lights up permanently and yellow, it is not necessary to contact a mechanic immediately. However, not all cars have a flashing signal. In these cases, it will likely be orange or red to emphasize urgency.

This is explained in a report from Kavak, the car buying and selling platform, which also lists some issues why this warning call may appear on the dashboard:

– Engine damage.

– The broadcast.

– The emissions team.

– Modules and sensors.

– The air or fuel supply.

– The ignition system.

The platform also refuted a popular belief that the “check engine” light may come on due to lack of oil, which is not the case. Although it is a serious problem, there is a separate sign on the dashboard warning you about this problem.
