Lazio has qualified for the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. The Biancocelesti defeated city rivals AS Roma 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico. Mattia Zaccagni scored the only goal from a penalty shortly after half-time. Romelu Lukaku played the entire game but is in the clutches of the Lazio defense (and especially Alessio Romagnoli).

After a first half in which there was very little to offer, the second half immediately provided excitement. After five minutes, Lazio Rome were belatedly awarded a penalty for a foul on midfielder Matteo Guendouzi in the penalty area. Striker Mattia Zaccagni (51st) got behind the ball and didn’t fail.

Roma looked for the equalizer but couldn’t find it. Andrea Belotti, Lukaku’s fellow striker, had a great opportunity to bring Roma level but his attempt was well saved by the Lazio goalkeeper. It was a frustrating evening for Lukaku, who had seen his team beat Cremonese in the preliminary round. The striker could hardly score a goal and in the end Lukaku hit an overhead kick over the crossbar (video from 2:29).

Both teams finished the game with ten points after two late red cards.

Roma doesn’t have much time to recover from the Cup defeat in the Coppa Italia. On Sunday they will face top team AC Milan again in the competition.

CDK wins in Milan

Atalanta also made it to the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup. La Dea defeated AC Milan 1-2 at the San Siro. Teun Koopmeijners scored both goals for the visitors after Rafael Leao gave the Rossoneri the lead.

Charles De Ketelaere was allowed to start against his parent club and was substituted in the 78th minute.
