A court camera at the Las Vegas Regional Justice Center captured an incident in which a man charged with attempted assault attacked a female judge during a retrial. In an unguarded moment, the defendant rushed toward the judge and jumped over the defense table and the judge’s bench. Fortunately, the judge only suffered minor injuries.

In the incident, which was captured on court video, Judge Mary Kay Holthus fell from her chair and hit the wall behind her. She suffered several minor injuries in the attack but was not hospitalized, court officials said. According to NBC Philadelphia.com, officials said a bailiff who responded almost immediately was also injured and hospitalized with a bleeding wound to his forehead and a dislocated shoulder.

Responsible for the attack is the thirty-year-old defendant Deobra Delone Redden, who was thrown to the ground by the members of the judicial guard standing in between immediately after jumping behind the judge’s bench. The attacker was arrested after the incident and taken to the Clark County Detention Center, where he is charged with several new crimes, including assault on a protected person, according to records.

“It happened so quickly that it was difficult to respond to it,” said Richard Scow, the lead district attorney who prosecuted Redden after his arrest last year on charges that Redden attacked a man with a baseball bat. Redden’s defense attorney Caesar Almase has not yet commented on the incident.

Redden was not taken into custody and appeared voluntarily in court on Wednesday. During the trial, he asked the judge for leniency and described himself as “a person who never stops doing the right thing, no matter how hard it is.” “I’m not a rebellious person,” he told the judge, adding that he didn’t think he should be sent to prison. “But if it’s right for you, then you have to do what you have to do.

When the judge made it clear that she was sending him behind bars and the bailiff moved to handcuff him, Redden let out a shout of abuse and stormed toward the bench.

According to records, Redden was examined prior to trial and found mentally competent to stand trial on a charge of attempted assault with serious bodily injury. He was previously in prison for domestic violence in Nevada, according to state records.
