As of January 1, 2024, smoking will still be just as harmful to your health and even worse for your wallet, regardless of whether it is electronic cigarettes or traditional cigarettes. For example, an excise tax of 0.15 euros per ml will be imposed on e-liquids, while the price of tobacco products will increase by about 25%, the Federal Ministers of Finance and Public Health confirmed to the Belga Agency.

Specifically, you have to pay two euros more for a pack of cigarettes (plus/minus 25%). The price of pot tobacco will also rise. The excise tax increase amounts to 52 euros per thousand cigarettes and 42.6 euros per kilo of smoking tobacco.

The fluid level also rises

A new tax on liquids (with or without nicotine) for electronic cigarettes will also be introduced. It is 0.15 euros per ml, which corresponds to an increase of 1.5 euros for a 10 ml bottle and 16.5 euros for a 100 ml bottle.

During the legislative period, the De Croo government intensified its fight against smoking through the “Tobacco Plan”, which is reflected in a series of measures aimed at leading to a “tobacco-free generation”.

According to the World Health Organization, increasing the price of tobacco is one of the six best measures to combat tobacco use.

According to the Cancer Foundation, 24% of the population in Belgium smokes, of which 19% smoke daily (according to data from 2022, the rate is about 14 cigarettes per day). However, smoking is the most common preventable cause of cancer. Almost 40 Belgians die every day (14,000 people per year) as a result of smoking. Not to mention the 300,000 Belgians who suffer from tobacco-related illnesses.
