Former US President Donald Trump has lost his lawsuit against The New York Times newspaper, world media reported on Saturday, January 13.
It is noted that the decision on Trump’s lawsuit against the newspaper was made by the New York State Supreme Court on January 12 (local time). This was announced by the publication’s representative, Daniela Rhodes Ha, with her decision
“The court has sent a signal to those who want to use the justice system to silence journalists.”
Donald Trump’s lawyers, however, called the $393,000 requested for legal fees “excessive, excessive and inadequate.”

The same lawsuit Trump filed in 2021 against the New York Times (NYT) and his niece Mary Trump referenced a series of 2018 NYT articles about his finances, particularly “the tax evasion that sustained Trump’s business empire.” As the journalists found out, the former US president did not get his fortune through his own efforts, as he likes to emphasize, but through tax evasion and other fraudulent activities involving his father’s company.
NYT reporters David Barstow, Susan Craig and Russ Buettner won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for this investigation. Trump, on the other hand, sued the newspaper and three of its employees for $100 million in compensation. However, in May 2023, Judge Robert Reed rejected Trump’s challenge to the spending because “it is not a question of constitutional right.”
Mary Trump, the former US president’s niece, has publicly criticized him on several occasions. In her book published in 2020, the woman admitted that she leaked his tax records to NYT reporters. Trump’s lawyers announced on January 12 that the lawsuit against Mary Trump was still pending.
