The BBC reported that sections of the Thames Tunnel near Ebbsfleet station in Kent were flooded and service disruptions were causing chaos at London’s St Pancras, where Eurostar trains depart for the continent. The restriction of connections, especially to Paris, brought to tears many young passengers who went to Paris Disneyland for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

According to the BBC, the water in the tunnels is due to heavy rain in the area and engineers from Network Rail and Thames Water are working to fix the problem, according to the BBC.

Southeastern Railway high-speed trains line up at Ashford International Station in Kent, England. Services to the continent were suspended on Saturday 30 December 2023 due to a flooded tunnel between Ebbsfleet and St Pancras.

The weather made travel difficult for thousands of people on the eve of New Year’s Eve celebrations and the start of the New Year. Meteorologists have warned of rain and strong winds for much of the UK this weekend

In the case of the Channel Tunnel, this is the second major operational disruption in ten days. Delays occurred on December 21 due to strong winds and rain, but were brought to a halt by an unexpected strike by French company Getlink’s workers.

Storm Pia hit northern Europe, accompanied by a hurricane. We can already feel its echoes here
