The body of another victim was found in the flood-hit state of Victoria. This brings the death toll from the storms that devastated eastern Australia over the Christmas holidays to ten, writes The Guardian. Victoria Police received information on Wednesday that a man was camping in the countryside with his partner. The woman was found on Tuesday after a flash flood in Buchan, East Gippsland.
Federal MP for Gippsland Darren Chester visited the site on Wednesday and thanked Parks Victoria for helping to move the campers to higher ground. “Emergency teams are on scene investigating the tragic loss of life. The park will remain closed for the foreseeable future,” he wrote on Facebook.
“The scenes are more like an inland tsunami. “It is a terrible trigger and my thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman, as well as the Parks Victoria staff and first responders who are dealing with this traumatic event,” Chester added on social media.
Three friends who were enjoying their annual fishing trip are among nine other Australians who have already died in the series of dangerous storms. Another dead is Brisbane teacher Stephen Tait.
Two women died while exploring the “Tunnel of Love”, a network of stormwater drains, in Gympie. The kilometer-long tunnel is known as a local adventure spot. Another victim is a girl from Brisbane. The weather washed them down the drain. Her body was discovered after an extensive search, police said.
Dangerous storms also claimed the life of a man in Victoria when a tree branch fell on his property in Caringal on Christmas Day. The latest Queensland victim is a 59-year-old woman who was hit by a tree. A 19-year-old is still missing.
