In November 2023, the number of tourists arriving in Morocco increased by 9% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 977,049 visitors. Record visitor numbers, even as travel revenue appears to be struggling to keep up with this upward momentum. If we broaden the perspective to the period from January to November 2023, the figures are equally significant, with around 13.25 million visitors, an increase of 36% compared to the same period in 2022, according to the latest statistics from the Tourism Observatory .

As for the performance of the Kingdom’s main airports last November, the results are mixed but overall positive. Thus, we learn that Agadir Al Massira Airport recorded a growth of 21% (31% in the first eleven months of last year) and that Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport recorded a growth of 9% (33% in the first eleven months of last year year) recorded). On the other hand, Marrakesh-Ménara recorded a 7% increase in arrivals (42% in the first eleven months of last year), while Casablanca airport recorded a 5% increase (19% in the first eleven months of last year). ).

The emissions markets are also showing positive signals in November 2023, with an increase of 35% from Germany and an increase of 10% from the United Kingdom. However, Spain and the United States recorded declines of 9% and 8%, respectively. In the period January to November 2023, Spain and the United States recorded an increase of 52%, Italy 48% and the United Kingdom 44%.

The tourist accommodation industry also remains unaffected by this positive development. In November 2023, overnight stays in classified establishments increased by 6% compared to November 2022. International tourism recorded a positive development of 12% while the domestic segment recorded a decline of 7%. Over the first 11 months of last year, overnight stays increased by 38% compared to the same period in 2022, with international tourism increasing by 60% and domestic tourism increasing by 8%.

The most important tourist destinations also recorded positive developments. For the month of November 2023 alone, despite the recent tremors in the region, we recorded an increase of 2% in Marrakesh, 14% in Agadir, 13% in Casablanca, 5% in Tangier, 12% in Essaouira and 7% in Al Haouz. However, Fez and Rabat recorded declines of 9% and 8%, respectively.

In the period from January to November 2023, the main destinations continued this upward trend, with Al Haouz leading the way with an increase of 64%, followed by Marrakech (53%), Essaouira (41%), Casablanca (36%), Fez (32%), Agadir (29%) and Rabat (25%).

However, a dissonance can be heard in foreign currency travel revenues, which recorded a 19% decline to 8.8 billion dirhams last November, compared to 10.8 billion dirhams in 2022. The recovery in volumes has therefore not been fully translated into value implemented. However, the cumulative figure over the first eleven months of the year shows an increase of 15.7% to 97.4 billion dirhams, compared to 84.1 billion dirhams in 2022, a sign that the overall trend remains positive.
