“This country is in ruins!” said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smér-SD) angrily in an interview for TV JOJ. According to him, Slovakia has financial and economic problems. He also added a word about the war in Ukraine. The sanctions against Russia are not effective, the Russian economy is making progress, he said. He also spoke out against the issue of veto rights.

The government of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico of the Direction – Social Democracy party proposed in December to abolish the special prosecutor’s office that oversees investigations into the most serious criminal cases, including corruption cases of previous governments led by his party.

Fitz’s party now argues that the Attorney General’s Office and the Special Prosecutor’s Office are engaged in an institutional war that undermines the principles of legal certainty.

The opposition has reservations about changes to criminal law. And that the law, for example, was written by lawyers defending people close to the Směr SD party. For example, Jozef Prochko, a member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, is a critic of the law.

According to Fico, some opposition leaders are simply afraid that the National Crime Agency might also take action against them. “I understand that the opposition is under enormous stress. “They have to protect themselves because they believe they have done things for which they can be held responsible,” Fico said of the opposition’s behavior in the interview for TV JOJ. “Why is it all about adopting a change in criminal law in Slovakia as a whole when we are following the path that all the other countries around us have taken?” the Prime Minister did not understand.

“This country is fucked! Financially and economically. And you all worry us with what Pročko is shouting in parliament,” Fico fumed in the interview, saying his government had taken over the country with the worst public finance situation. “We are all dedicated to Pročko, Lipšič and Matovič. “I think this country has different problems than this one,” Fico added.

According to Fico, Slovakia’s specific problems include the use of European funds and the question of the right to veto in negotiations with other EU states. “We are a small country, we have no influence on the world by far.” What we can influence, however, is that we insist on strict adherence to international law. Present the evidence and we will vote. “But not that we will automatically agree because of a paper they send us,” he said, rejecting that in today’s world there should be a single opinion on everything.

“It wasn’t even like that under communism,” he explained. “If you disagree, you are automatically considered an extremist and must be eliminated,” he added.

Fico also considers the war in Ukraine to be a current problem. He does not oppose humanitarian aid to Ukraine and his government provides it, but in his opinion nothing will change what is currently happening there. “The occupied territories are under the complete control of Russia. “Russia has not collapsed, the economy is moving, the ruble is working, the sanctions are not working,” Fico said, adding that all Russian energy companies are signing record contracts with China and India.

On the issue of the war in Ukraine, he added that at the beginning of the war, the West thwarted the possibility of an agreement between Ukraine and Russia. This was because he viewed the war as a “great opportunity” and did not want to deal with a ceasefire.

According to Fico, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now in a more advantageous position than the West. “It cannot be solved militarily,” he also said, reiterating that Slovakia would not send any more weapons or ammunition to Ukraine.
