On the flight from Algeria to France, a stowaway was found near the plane’s wheels. He survived, but was in poor condition.

Reporting from DWOn Friday (December 29, 2023), a man was found hiding in the undercarriage compartment of a commercial aircraft flying from Algeria to Paris. The man was found in the lower compartment of the plane during a technical inspection after an Air Algerie flight from Oran, Algeria, landed at Paris’ Orly airport on Thursday.

The airport told AFP that the man was found alive but in critical condition due to severe hypothermia after a 2.5-hour flight. This man in his 20s had no ID and was immediately taken to the nearest hospital.

Commercial aircraft fly at altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet (9,000 to 12,000 meters), where temperatures typically drop to -50 degrees Celsius (-58F). The lack of oxygen made it difficult for everyone to travel in the unheated and unpressurized landing gear compartment.

According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 132 people attempted to travel in the undercarriage compartment of a commercial aircraft between 1947 and 2021. And the mortality rate for people who attempted to travel this way was 77%.

In April this year, a man’s body was found in the undercarriage of a plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport that took off from Toronto and had previously departed from Nigeria.

In 2015, the body of a stowaway on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg to Heathrow landed in a shop in Richmond, southwest London. The second stowaway survived the ten-hour flight and was found on the floor of the plane.
