The province of Gelderland is allowed to scare away wolves in the De Hoge Veluwe National Park by acting shyly with a paintball gun. This was decided by the judge in Utrecht.
According to the court, a wolf expert has determined that one or more wolves in the park are exhibiting abnormal behavior that could pose a serious threat to public safety. According to the judge, this outweighs the importance of preventing disturbance to the wolf, which is prohibited by law.
According to deputy Egbert van Dijk (BBB), this is good news for Drenthe. “The chance that people and wolves will come into contact with each other more often is high. The chance that we have to intervene in undesirable situations also increases. We are therefore pleased with the court’s decision because it sheds light on how we can do this and act when intervention is required.”
The judge has now made a final judgment in the case between the animal rights organization De Faunabescherming and the province of Gelderland. The judge had previously banned the province from shooting a wolf with a paintball gun on De Hoge Veluwe, which the court said was a negligent and inadequately reasoned decision.
Now that the province of Gelderland has corrected these deficiencies, the province can start shooting a paintball at the wolf, the court rules. The Fauna Protection Society will not leave it at that, reports Omroep Gelderland. The organization goes to the State Council.
It is unclear to what extent this statement also applies to other areas in the Netherlands. Shooting wolves with paint has not yet been discussed as an option in the Drenthe parliament.
Last year a wolf was shot dead in Wapse after biting a sheep farmer on the arm. The wolf was shot by a police dog handler about two hours after the incident on the orders of the deputy mayor. It is not yet clear whether this was permitted by law.
