According to WADA, the use of tramadol in the world of sport has increased significantly in recent years – particularly in cycling, rugby and football – and the organization has therefore studied the drug extensively.

As a result of more than ten years of research, it was found that the painkiller based on synthetic opioids has an addictive effect, which is why it was included in the list of banned substances.

It should be noted that tramadol has been banned in cycling since 2019. For example, in Norway it is classified as a narcotic.

WADA is increasingly focusing on the use of painkillers due to their excessive use in several sports.

The use of painkillers was particularly discussed during the final round of the 2022 World Cup. The football calendar has become significantly tighter and the use of painkillers has become more frequent.

For example, Neven Subotic, former player of the Serbian national football team and the German Bundesliga club Dortmund “Borussia”, revealed in an interview with the newspaper “Die Welt” that painkillers were distributed like candy before games – everyone could take as much as they wanted.
