Alina Žilinaite, representative of the Center for the Protection of Children’s Rights and Adoption, confirms that the girl lives with a guardian and her parents still have the opportunity to take her into their care.
“The identity of the girl’s mother has been established. Kaunas City Police have refused to open a preliminary investigation. We will not make any further comments,” police representative Odeta Vaitkevičiene told BNS.
No signs of violence were observed on the girl either. The child speaks and walks, but it is difficult to separate from the parents, because at this age the child is already attached to the parents. Most likely, the parents abandoned the girl because they had difficulties.
“There were a lot of tears; it is a traumatic event for a child, the consequences of which we will see over time,” says Anželika Vežbavičute, head of the Department for the Protection of Children’s Rights in Kaunas.
In such cases, the parents will not be searched and no penalty will be imposed on them. Parents can change their decision within three months, but if they do not apply, a new family will be found for the child.
The girl is the oldest child in the rescue daycare so far.
