The magazine “La Nuova Sardegna” reports that the management of the “Stellantis” group has given the “Lancia” factory the green light to take part in rally competitions again. The author of the publication is the experienced Italian journalist Marco Giordo, who has been closely following rally competitions and the World Rally Championship for decades.
“Lancia” will build its new rally car based on the “Ypsilon” model and it will comply with the rules of the “Rally2” class. Testing and development of the car will begin as early as this year, but this car could make its competition debut in 2025, writes Giordo. It is also known that the goal of “Lancia” is to return to the world championship.
“Lancia” only became a factory of the “Stellantis” group in 2021, but at the same time Luca Napolitano was appointed its new CEO.
“Lancia” successfully took part in the World Rally Championship in the 1970s and 1980s, and then again in the early 1990s. “Lancia” has ten WRC titles in the manufacturers’ championship and four titles in the drivers’ championship. Juha Kankunen won as part of the team in the 1987 and 1991 seasons, and Miki Biasions – in 1988 and 1989. In addition, “Lancia” was once represented by Mark Allen, who won eleven races as part of the factory, and Henri Toivonen, who joined the team before tragic accident in 1986 brought two victories.
