Last week, for unknown reasons, his car veered off the highway into a ravine, rolled over several times and ended up under a bridge. Even though the road was busy, other road users didn’t notice anything because they couldn’t see down while driving.
The seriously injured driver was in such a state that he couldn’t even reach for his cell phone to call for help. “He tried to scream, but no one could hear him,” said one of the fishermen who found the man.
As he and his nephew were looking for a suitable place to fish, he noticed something shiny under the bridge. Both initially assumed that the driver of the pickup was dead.
“I touched his shoulder and the driver woke up, raised his head and started talking to us. “He was very happy to see us,” the fisherman added.
The injured man was transported by rescue helicopter to a hospital in the nearby city of South Bend. According to police, it is a miracle that he survived the accident. He said that he would most likely not last the next night, also because meteorologists expected a strong cooling.
“If the two individuals had not been walking around the creek, this incident would most likely have had a different outcome,” Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said in a statement.
