When asked about the concern of a part of society that a Russian attack on NATO is almost inevitable in the future, Riekstins noted that two main threats to NATO have been defined – Russia and terrorism, and, accordingly, the necessary measures to strengthen it of security and to implement NATO’s new defense plans, which provide for the protection of member states. from the first minute and the first centimeter.

The ambassador acknowledged that the almost two-year Russian war against Ukraine undeniably creates insecurity among people, but NATO is well aware of the risks and is taking the necessary measures, especially to deter a potential aggressor. So far, NATO’s deterrent measures have always achieved their goals, emphasized Riekstins, who believes that NATO’s message is still being heard on the Russian side.

Riekstiņš emphasized that there is a lot of propaganda from Russia’s official channels, directed both at home and abroad, the purpose of which is to conjure up the image that supposedly everything is fine in Russia, but the purpose is to Fear of sowing abroad.

However, one should not believe this propaganda, the diplomat emphasized, citing as an example the versions of Russia’s supposedly successful transition to a war industry. If Russia has such a large military production, why is it still looking for help from North Korea and Iran, the ambassador noted rhetorically, recalling that Russian losses in people and equipment in the war were enormous.

“We don’t need to be self-reliant, but we don’t need to panic either,” the ambassador added.

As far as NATO’s future issues are concerned, Riekstiņš does not see the outcome of the US presidential election as a very big risk for NATO’s future development direction, as previous experience has not shown that US support for our security needs would significantly decrease under a different president .

According to Riekstinas, recent decisions in Turkey show that everything is moving towards Sweden becoming a member of NATO in the coming weeks.

On the other hand, it is still difficult to say who will be the next Secretary General of NATO, as everything is decided through the informal negotiation process of NATO heads of state.
