Josef Šindelek (62), a native of Brno, was arrested on November 3 in the city of Puerto Iguazú on the border between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil on the basis of an international arrest warrant. The Czech authorities then demanded his extradition because he was serving a sentence for fraud. But even after two months, Šindelek remains imprisoned in a detention center in the small town of Eldorado in northern Argentina.

They are waiting for the judge

“The local judge accepted the extradition request from the Czech side, then in the first third of December he conducted an interview with Josef, who agreed to be extradited to the Czech Republic.” But nothing has happened since then. The judge was supposed to prepare all the materials to send to the Czech Republic, but he has not done so yet. So he waits for him to give it to Josef to sign and then send it off. After that, there is a period of 45 days to collect Josef Česi,” explained Šírová.

In their opinion, the actual handover of Šindelek should take place in such a way that the Argentines will take him from Eldorado to Buenos Aires to the airport, where the Czech police will pick him up.

In Argentina they arrested a Czech man who had been wanted for 25 years

“It will take a long time, but we hope that it goes well, that will keep us afloat.” Josef is doing relatively well in terms of health, even if the diet in prison is very monotonous, which is already apparent. In addition, visitors were prohibited from bringing cooked food to prisoners. Only packaged food is allowed,” noted Šírová, who lived with Šindelek for most of the 25 years he spent as a refugee outside the Czech Republic.

“We traveled completely relaxed for the whole 25 years, we didn’t hide from anyone, we had contact with people and authorities, we obtained visas,” said Šírová, who lived with the wanted man in Italy and Australia, then for a few years in Malaysia and finally in Paraguay.

They traveled to Argentina last November to remotely request an extract from Šindelk’s criminal record in the Czech Republic, which they planned to attach to the upcoming pardon application.

“The petition for clemency has been written. We waited for the pardon plan to go directly back to the president, which happened on January 1st. In the middle of the month I will go to the Czech Embassy in Buenos Aires, hand them the application and ask them if they could officially send it to the President’s Office,” said Šírová.

A petition was also created

She believes that the request could also be supported by the petition she wrote in the last few days, which can be found on the website “milostprojosefa6.webnode.cz”. Although the main reason for this petition is the effort to release Šindelek, according to Šírová, it is also about the general interest of Czech citizens.

“Many people expressed their dissatisfaction that so much money should be spent on transporting and imprisoning a person who committed something thirty years ago, even though he was responsible for the harm caused a long time ago (about 2, “It inspired me to write an e-petition to save public money, with the idea of pardoning Josef,” said Šírová.

In her opinion, it is about not wasting state funds on transport and prison, which, in her opinion, could amount to up to three million crowns. The petition is addressed directly to the president and had nearly two hundred signatures as of Tuesday.
