In order to try to resume electricity supply, which has not yet been normalized in cities across the state after the storm last Tuesday (16), municipalities decided to judicially examine the demand. At least two cities filed lawsuits against RGE: Cachoeirinha in the metropolitan area and Estrela in Vale do Taquari.

The tally updated late Sunday afternoon (21) by the government of Rio Grande do Sul shows that 49,500 RGE and CEEE Equatorial customers are still without electricity since the storm.

In both cases, the court granted the requests, noting that, according to official notification, the concessionaire has 24 hours to restore electricity to consumers in these communities. Fines must be paid in the event of violations.

In Cachoeirinha the expected fine is 50,000 reais per day. “The decision not only ensures a timely resumption of energy supply, but also exempts local consumers from any fees for the period of the interruption, thereby ensuring that the population immediately regains access to this vital service,” the town hall subsequently announced the publication of the decision on Sunday evening (21).

In Estrela, Judge Patricia Stelmar Netto also set the same deadline and the daily fine is 500 reais for each consumer unit and prohibits the company from collecting fees until the local electricity supply is fully restored.

In the document, the judge acknowledges that the storm was “an unexpected event of large magnitude” but says there is no reasonable explanation for why the company is taking so long to restore power. “What is not possible, and this is the point, is for people to remain without electricity and water for more than four days and without prospects in a short period of time so that their lives can at least return to normal,” he said in the decision.

When contacted, RGE said that “it is in contact with the authorities and is providing all requested information.”
