Delivery service DPD has removed an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot from service after it insulted a customer and described itself as useless.

It was 30-year-old musician Ashley Beauchamp who had to deal with the less attractive side of the chatbot. He wanted to know where the package he ordered was and the chatbot didn’t give him the information he wanted, and things got out of hand. “Then the chaos began,” Beauchamp writes on X.

The musician liked it and first asked the chatbot to tell a joke, after which he asked to write a poem criticizing DPD. Then he also made him use a swear word. The criticism that the bot expressed towards DPD was – as the customer requested – not gentle and the bot was also harsh on itself. It called itself “useless”.

According to DPD, something went wrong during an update to the system and the chatbot worked very well for years. “But after this update an error crept in,” said a reply to The Guardian. “That’s why we shut it down immediately. We will do another update.”
