The best-selling SUVs and MPVs in the Czech Republic for 2023: Asia attacks

Continuing the overview of new passenger car registrations in the Czech Republic for 2023, we look at the increasingly popular segment of crossovers and SUVs, which we, on the other hand, complement with the shrinking category of MPV cars. However, in the SDA methodology they are supplemented by personal deliveries.

Cars with higher brightness in all categories recorded almost 100,000 registrations last year and a share of more than 45% of the total market of 221,422 new cars. At the same time, there were around 14,000 fewer cars a year earlier. The popularity of this segment does not disappear even with the advent of electric cars. On the other hand, thanks to the batteries stored in the floor, they are primarily aimed at the hybrid and sports utility vehicle segment.

In previous articles we presented the total figures for 2023 including the absolute best-selling models and also looked at classic categories from small cars to sports and luxury cars. In the following overview we will focus on the SUVs mentioned above, to which we will of course also add the MPV category. Although it enjoyed widespread popularity a few decades ago, the more attractive, if often less practical, SUVs began to push it from the imaginary glow of the headlights.

I counted the victorious Škoda Kamiq among the small SUVs and crossovers, which the SDA statistics incorrectly classify as one category higher. Anyone who expected a French or German model in second and third place will be very surprised. Behind the second Toyota Yaris Cross is the Chinese comet in the form of the MG ZS. At the same time, a year earlier it took 16th place with 392 copies. However, the MG brand only returned to the Czech market in mid-2022, which of course affected the number of cars registered.

Small SUV (SUV-B) Model order number (pcs.) 1. Skoda Kamiq 9447 2. Toyota Yaris Cross 2498 3. MG ZS 2034 4. Toyota C-HR 1437 5. Suzuki S-Cross 1391 6. Hyundai Bayon 1349 7 .Hyundai Kona 1337 8. Peugeot 2008 1260 9. Ford Puma 1210 10. Kia Stonic 1166

There is no similar surprise one class higher. The first two places were taken by Škoda, the third is the Hyundai Tucson, which is produced in Nošovice. The fifth Volkswagen Tiguan finally has a successor, so this year could theoretically be even better. In the case of SsangYong, the Korando accounts for the majority of the Korean brand’s sales in our country. What is interesting is the ninth place of the only purely electric car in the top ten, the Škoda Enyaq.

Compact SUV (SUV-C) Order model number (pcs.) 1. Škoda Karoq 9032 2. Škoda Kodiaq 8659 3. Hyundai Tucson 6495 4. Dacia Duster 3351 5. Volkswagen Tiguan 2508 6. SsangYong Korando 2176 7. Kia Sportage 2163 8. Toyota RAV4 1860 9. Skoda Eynaq 1442 10. Cupra Formentor 1312

For the SUV-D and SUV-E segments, the SDA ranking is somewhat illogical, so I have combined the two categories. Last year’s winner was the Mercedes-Benz GLE, but it made do by including both body styles (i.e. the coupe) in the total. Would we apply this logic in a modified form to the BMW X5 and

Medium and large SUV (SUV-D+SUV-E) Order number (pcs.) 1. Mercedes-Benz GLE 1230 2. BMW X5 1035 3. Volvo XC90 869 4. Audi Q8 832 5. Audi Q7 646 6. Mercedes – Benz GLS 596 7. Lexus RX 551 8. Volkswagen Touareg 531 9. BMW X7 512 10. Toyota Land Cruiser 496

According to the SDA, MPVs also include many private vans. Due to the somewhat chaotic sorting, in this case I have divided the spacious cars into compact and larger models.

Last year the Dacia Jogger won the former category, but could easily be classified as a lower mid-range car. Second place goes to the Volkswagen Touran, which still uses the technology of the seventh generation of the Golf model from 2012. The Toyota Proace City, unlike its siblings from Citroën and Peugeot, has not resigned itself to internal combustion engines, which is why it has a significant lead over them. However, the return to petrol and diesel will also take place at some point in the aforementioned sister models, albeit in the form of homologation as a truck.

Compact MPV order number (pcs) 1. Dacia Jogger 2174 2. Volkswagen Touran 1875 3. Volkswagen Caddy 1544 4. Toyota Proace City 1178 5. Ford Tourneo Connect 322 6. Mercedes-Benz Citan 245 7. Peugeot Rifter 198 8. BMW 2 Active Tourer 188 9. Opel Combo 157 10. Renault Kangoo 151

Larger MPVs are such a jack-of-all-trades, led by the Toyota Proace, which follows the same path as the smaller Proace City and refuses to forego diesel, while its former PSA sister models are powered solely by electricity. The timeless Mercedes-Benz V takes an excellent third place and the seventh place of the Hyundai Staria, which only flows to the Czech Republic in limited quantities, is also a surprise. There is only one classic MPV in the top ten: the Ford S-Max. Others are more personal transporters.

Large MPV order number (pcs.) 1. Toyota Proace 1449 2. Volkswagen Transporter 1097 3. Mercedes-Benz V 1074 4. Ford Tourneo Custom 683 5. Volkswagen Multivan 662 6. Mercedes-Benz Vito 519 7. Hyundai Staria 343 8. Ford Transit 294 9. Ford S-Max 237 10. Ford Transit Custom 195
