The Belgian likes to save: He is one of the ten largest savers in the world

In ninth place with an overall savings score of 9.48 out of 10 (according to the CityIndex methodology), Belgium stands out with an average household savings of 2,530.31 euros.

Belgian residents benefit from an average disposable income per household of 27,176.73 euros and spend an average of 8% on their savings. However, note that Belgium has one of the lowest average long-term interest rates (between 2000 and 2022) at 2.75%.

Switzerland, the undisputed austerity champion

With an impressive score of 9.83 out of 10, Switzerland is at the top of the ranking. Swiss households that save 17% of their gross income will set aside an average of 5,381.24 euros per year between 2000 and 2022. Here too, Switzerland shines. The lowest long-term interest rates since 2000 are a modest 1.44%, 63% lower than in Luxembourg.

In second place in the rankings with an overall savings score of 9.69 out of 10, Luxembourg has the second highest disposable household income between 2000 and 2022 (36,796.11 euros). It exceeds that of Belgium by 35% (27,178.67 euros).

Luxembourg residents invest 8% of their disposable income in savings, an average of 2,758.02 euros. Luxembourg’s long-term interest rates are 2.35%, just behind Switzerland and Germany.

The United States rounds out the podium with an overall savings score of 9.67 out of 10.

Taking the dollar exchange rate into account, the United States has the highest average disposable household income in the ranking (38,794.50 euros), which is 45% more than Canada (26,816.95 euros) and three times as much as Mexico (12,844.67 euros).

Americans with average household savings of $2,697 wisely invest 7% of their disposable income in their savings.
