Former Swallow member Shota Nakayama plays for Oisix Niigata, who will join the NPB’s second team this season.
Starting this year, former Yakult outfielder Shota Nakayama will play for the Oisix Niigata Albirex Baseball Club, joining the NPB second team. He married after being told he was out of action and moved to Niigata last year with his beloved wife, who also served as his “trainer.” He seeks a return to the NPB by using his powerful long-strike abilities as a weapon.

Nakayama gained widespread attention on the popular program “Professional Baseball Team Notification,” which aired late last year. At the 12-team tryout, he shot powerfully and his wife, Aiyumi, watched from the stands as if she were praying. After being released from active service by Yakult, she married and continued to live in Kumamoto last year, where she played in the independent league Kyushu Asia League Hi no Kuni Salamanders.
“I proposed to him. I was worried about how things would turn out as my job wasn’t stable, but he agreed and said, ‘I will continue to support him.’ He was watching me. I thought I had to do my best for this person and make them happy.”
Life in Kumamoto was by no means easy. The income from the independent league was not enough, so Aiyumi worked from morning to evening on weekdays to raise money for living expenses. “Even though I made you feel bad, you always acted cheerful, and together we managed to overcome it.” Although they couldn’t live the life they had imagined as newlyweds, their bond grew stronger.
Although he was an amateur baseball player, he learned on his own and his wife supported him. “It also helped me grow spiritually.”
Although Aiyumi has no experience in baseball, she learns on her own by watching Baseball Instructor X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube for her husband. When his clout flags, he offers advice while watching the video he made together. Shortly before the tryout, he asked for a practice partner and continued to knock, even though his arm was covered in bruises.
“Even though he wasn’t used to it, he worked hard every day. At the start of the independent league I couldn’t bat at all. When I was in crisis, I asked him, “What’s going on here?” and he answered. This made me feel better emotionally. That’s when I saw the first results. Until now (when I was at Yakult) I only played baseball for myself, but now it’s different. I am just I do my best for my wife. I am also growing spiritually. He gave it to me.”
I can’t thank my wife enough for her continued support. That’s why I’m determined to fight for my life in my new hometown of Niigata. The two are currently training alone to prepare for camp-in on February 1st.
The only time I showed my wife the NPB uniform was at tryouts. “I will be able to return the favor by wearing the (NPB) uniform in official matches. I would like to present my findings and appeal to NPB.”
Nakayama has something to protect. For my wife, who also acts as a trainer and has supported me the most. Returning to NPB will be a tough road, but the two will work together to achieve their dreams.
