Etc, a startup operating under the wing of the UK’s BT Group, has launched an interesting project to reuse street telecom cabinets instead of scrapping them.

The still visible elements of telecommunications networks are the mostly gray or white – or in Scotland even green – street cabinets in which service providers install devices or distributors for various purposes.

Etc, the digital incubation arm of BT Group, has now launched a project in East Lothian, Scotland, converting traditional green cabinets into charging stations for charging electric cars. According to the company, this transformation can be an optimal solution to one of the most pressing problems of electric cars, namely the deficits of the charging network, which are particularly characteristic of rural regions – exactly where, by the way, there are typically more of these cabinets along public roads.

According to Etc, potentially 60,000 telecommunications road boxes in the UK alone could be converted or expanded (or not) to allow electric car charging.
