Speaker Pelosi Calls for Netanyahu’s Resignation: A Bold Move in US-Israel Relations

Call ⁤for Netanyahu’s Resignation by Nancy Pelosi

Former House Speaker ‌Nancy Pelosi has joined the chorus of Democratic ⁤voices criticizing Israeli Prime Minister ‌Benjamin‍ Netanyahu, urging him ‍to ⁢step down. This call comes in the ‌wake of the recent resignation of the intelligence chief of the Israel Defense Forces following the Hamas-led ‌attack on Oct. 7.

Pelosi, a representative from ⁢California, expressed‍ her disapproval of Netanyahu’s policies and actions, stating, “We recognize Israel’s ‍right to protect itself. ‍We reject the policy and the practice‌ of Netanyahu — terrible. What could be ⁤worse ⁤than what he has done in response?” Pelosi made these remarks during an interview with Irish⁣ broadcaster ‍RTÉ’s ⁤Six One News.

Obstacle to Peace

When asked about Netanyahu’s stance on peace, Pelosi questioned whether he is afraid of ‌peace, incapable of achieving it, or⁢ simply uninterested in pursuing it.‌ She highlighted‍ Netanyahu’s role as an⁢ obstacle to the two-state solution, ⁣emphasizing the ⁤need for a change in leadership.

The Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C.,⁣ has not⁣ yet ⁣responded to Pelosi’s call for Netanyahu’s resignation.

Push for Reevaluation of Arms Transfers

Earlier this month,⁣ Pelosi and other members of Congress signed a letter urging President Joe Biden and Secretary ⁣of State Antony ‍Blinken to‍ reconsider the authorization of a‍ new arms ‌package transfer to Israel. This request came in light⁣ of an airstrike that resulted ‍in the deaths of‍ seven ⁢World Central Kitchen humanitarian workers.

According to local health officials,‌ over ⁢34,000 Palestinians have been killed ‍since the conflict⁤ began. The Israeli government⁣ reported approximately ‌1,200 casualties in Israel during the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, with around 250 hostages taken.

Senate’s Response

Senate Majority ⁢Leader Chuck Schumer also called for‍ new elections in Israel to⁤ replace Netanyahu, stating that the current coalition no longer ‍aligns with the country’s needs. The Senate recently passed a $95 billion aid package, including $26 billion in aid to‍ Israel and⁤ humanitarian⁤ relief in Gaza, which is expected to be signed into law ‍by President Biden.

The Haiku Steps are a set of 3,922 steps built by the United States Navy for military purposes during World War II. You can get a panoramic view of Hawaii from the top of the Haiku Stairs, built along the crest of Mount Ko’olau on the Island of Oahu.

In 1987, the city of Honolulu banned tourists from entering the Haiku Steps for safety reasons. This is because the stairs are too steep and there have been many accidents where tourists have fallen and died. Tourists who climb the stairs secretly were fined about 1 million won, but the number of tourists who climbed the stairs secretly did not decrease.

Afterwards, there was opinion among Hawaii residents to raise an entrance fee and set a limit on the number of daily visitors. However, in 2021, the city of Honolulu decided to completely demolish the Haiku Steps for public safety.
