Pakistan and Iran Join Forces Against Militants
Islamabad (AP) – In a show of solidarity, Pakistan and Iran have vowed to collaborate closely in combating militants based in Afghanistan, recognizing the grave threat they pose to regional and global security.
During a recent three-day visit by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi to Islamabad, the two neighboring countries, with a shared porous border, issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to a unified front against terrorism.
Enhanced Cooperation
President Raisi engaged in discussions with Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and army chief Gen. Asim Munir, emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation on counter-terrorism and security measures.
The joint statement highlighted the mutual resolve to combat terrorism and enhance security measures, reflecting a shared determination to address the escalating violence in the region.
Challenges and Threats
Pakistan has experienced a surge in militant activities, largely attributed to Afghanistan-based groups like the Taliban, who have intensified attacks following the rise of the Afghan Taliban in 2021.
While Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban of harboring Pakistani insurgents, the Afghan government has denied these claims, asserting its commitment to preventing cross-border attacks.
Similarly, Iran has faced security challenges from an Islamic State affiliate operating from Afghanistan, posing a threat to both countries, particularly in the border region of Baluchistan.
Promoting Peace and Cooperation
Both Pakistan and Iran emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and friendly border, underscoring the need for continuous collaboration among political, military, and security officials to address various threats, including narcotics smuggling and human trafficking.
Furthermore, the two nations agreed to expand economic ties by establishing new border markets, crossings, and free trade zones, aiming to boost trade and economic cooperation.
Regional Developments
In response to recent incidents, Pakistan and Iran condemned the suspected Israeli strike near the Iranian Embassy in Syria, which resulted in casualties. Iran retaliated with direct strikes on Israel, escalating tensions in the region.
Additionally, discussions were held on advancing the gas pipeline project between Pakistan and Iran, despite concerns over potential U.S. sanctions. The project, initiated in 2013 to supply Iranian natural gas to Pakistan, remains a focal point for energy cooperation between the two nations.

London Emergency Medical Services said four people were injured in three areas and taken to hospital. Among them, it was reported that there was one soldier who fell from his horse.
Authorities said all horses were captured and quarantined, and two horses were injured.
“A number of horses got out of control during routine training this morning,” the British army said in a statement “They have all been recovered and returned to their units, but a number of people and horses have injured and receiving appropriate treatment. .”
