British-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has announced that the crash of a plane “carrying several employees” en route to its Diavik mine resulted in “multiple fatalities.” He did not give the exact number, writes the American weekly newspaper.

According to rescuers in Trenton, Ontario, contact with the plane was lost shortly after takeoff around 8:50 a.m. local time (2:50 p.m. CET) from the city of Fort Smith, which is 320 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Yellow Knife.

Northwestern Air, which operated the twin-engine turboprop Jetstream, said the charter flight crashed 1.1 kilometers from the end of the runway.

One person survived

A source close to the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there were seven people on board the plane. One of them is expected to survive, but her condition is unknown.

Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said news of the plane crash had shocked the company.

“As a company, we are absolutely devastated by this news and offer our full support to our grieving employees and community today,” he said.
