Delhi: CPM Politburo member Brenda Karat said that as Prakash Karat’s wife, she was sidelined and neglected in the party. Brenda’s comments are included in the book, a compilation of memories of her experiences from 1975 to 1985. The book is entitled “An Education for Rita.” Brenda wrote in the book about her past experiences at a time when many in the party complained that women were constantly being neglected.
Previously, Brenda Karat’s resignation from the party conference in Calcutta was controversial. The protest was directed against the oppression of women in party committees. In this lawsuit, the party had taken action against Brenda. But Brenda’s demand was later taken into account in the party. Women were increasingly considered for top positions in the party.
Another point Brenda raises is that the media’s malicious campaign was directed against her. This remark came in the context of some newspapers calling the Congress Party’s opposition to the nuclear deal “Pati Patni Aur Wo” (Husband, Wife and Friend). S. Ramachandran Pillai, a PB member from Kerala, supported her in the party’s PB at that time. In the book, Brenda points out that there was a movement among party leaders at this level. The memoir mentions that she received support when she started working in Delhi but was ignored when she was elected to the top committee as Prakash Karat’s wife. Brenda talks about past experiences. The Bengali element has long been against Brenda and Prakash Karat.
