SONY recently launched the PS Portal accessory that allows users to play the PS5 via network streaming. However, some users are obviously not satisfied with this indirect form, so some modders suddenly came up with the idea of making the motherboard smaller. The PS5 Slim has been disassembled and paired with a 4K OLED screen to create a portable PS5 tablet.
DIY Perks, a YouTube channel with over 4 million subscribers for various magically modified technology products, believes that the PS5 Slim has the potential to become more portable with a stripped-down motherboard. The main problem with the modification is heat dissipation. Because the power consumption of PS5 Slim reaches 200W and the heat dissipation design of the host itself is too bloated, almost all original parts cannot be used.
Originally, the channel used a large pure copper radiator and heatpipe, as well as a “purely hand-crafted” nickel-plated copper base to house the chip and four sets of mini-blowers for airflow. Unfortunately the effect wasn’t ideal and I played for a short time after turning it on. After a while, an overheating warning appeared on the PS5.
To improve heat dissipation, the team added a relatively smaller pure copper cooler and replaced the fan with three sets of special thin fans used in gaming laptops. In addition to having stronger airflow and lower noise, this fan also has two fans. The side air outlet function can supply air to two radiators at the same time. The new solution also successfully solved the problem of heat dissipation and maintained the temperature of the chip at 42°C during full operation.
An exclusive back cover was then created using a 3D printer. In addition to the color continuation of SONY’s black and white aesthetic for the PS5-5 console, a specially designed stand has also been added to allow the tablet to stand more comfortably on the table.
After solving the problem of heat dissipation, now it is the turn of the front screen part. This part is actually not that difficult to modify. However, the team felt that the image quality of the LCD screen was too poor and decided to forego a Dell Alienware gaming laptop and stick the gear in it. The above 4K OLED screen has been transferred to the PS5 tablet. Finally, the team replaced the PS5’s original power supply with a smaller GaN power supply combined with homemade power cables, solving the power supply requirements in an external form.
The modified PS5 tablet is about the size of a gaming laptop and can easily be slipped into a backpack. And since it has a built-in screen, you just need to find a power outlet to use it straight away without any additional preparation. The screen makes carrying and playing more convenient and mobile.
