It’s not just the Czech Republic that has to contend with freezing temperatures, but also many European countries. The cold snap is hitting Serbia as well as Poland and Hungary, who are trying to help animals and the homeless. In the USA, some states are also reporting temperatures well below freezing, for example in Iowa the mercury on the thermometer is expected to drop to -24 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

A calm and mild December in the United States alternates with a stormy and cold January. A winter storm has swept across the eastern United States, leaving at least four people dead. North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama report the deaths.

There has been extreme cold in Hungary since Monday. The so-called “Red Code” came into force on Monday, obliging all social institutions to take in homeless people and offer them overnight accommodation.

“It was so cold that my body temperature dropped to 24 degrees. Three young people came to me, I was sick, so they called an ambulance. My heart almost stopped beating. When I arrived at the hospital, my heart stopped completely for 19 seconds,” described homeless man József Tóth.

Photographers, on the other hand, enjoy the low temperatures. The frost created a fairytale landscape on Lake Balaton. A layer of ice covered benches, blades of grass and tree trunks.

Even in southern Europe, extremely low temperatures cannot be avoided. On the Greek mainland, temperatures fell below freezing overnight and there was even heavy snowfall in hilly areas.
