January 24, 2024 | ScienceGuide must be discontinued on February 17, 2024. The editorial team had to throw in the towel after 26 years due to inadequate financial prospects. In a final attempt to save this platform, the editors are turning to the person who has always been at the center: you, the reader.

Dear ScienceGuide reader,

ScienceGuide must be discontinued on February 17, 2024. The editorial team had to throw in the towel after 26 years due to inadequate financial prospects. This is unfortunate because readership has never been better and an independent platform is more important than ever.

To date, ScienceGuide has been funded by a number of loyal academic institutions and organizations that value an open and independent platform. These are: Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Saxion, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Regieorgaan SIA, SURF, Platform Talent voor Techniek, PThU, HKU, Fontys, Arnhem Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences and Aeres.

Last year, all other universities, colleges and umbrella organizations were also asked to keep the platform available to the industry together and cost-effectively. There hasn’t been a positive response to it, although people say they value an independent platform and read the articles eagerly.

The editorial mailbox fills with reader responses every day and hundreds of articles are submitted for publication every year. But we don’t know what our valued readers and users think about it. We’ll find out now.

Only if it turns out by February 17th that 2,500 readers are willing to take out an annual subscription for 85 euros (including 9% VAT) will ScienceGuide be able to continue. It’s very simple: you grant a one-time authorization of €85, which we will only collect in mid-March 2024 when the target number of 2,500 subscribers is reached. If successful, your authorization will be converted into an annual subscription, the editorial team will receive sufficient perspective and we can continue to build the platform together with you. The website will then be accessible exclusively to partner institutions and subscribers.

If the desired number of subscribers is not reached, no deduction will be made from your bank account. The editorial team then says goodbye to all of you and ScienceGuide goes dark.

Do you want to maintain an independent platform for higher education? Then fill out this form.

This will give you a one-time authorization for €85 (including 9% VAT). We will only seek this authorization from mid-March if the target number of 2,500 subscribers is reached by February 17th. Your authorization will then be converted into an exclusive annual subscription. Further information can be found here (stop message) and at the end of this page.

ScienceGuide treats personal data confidentially and in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The personal information you provide will only be used to facilitate your subscription to ScienceGuide and to keep you informed. Your personal data will not be used by ScienceGuide for commercial purposes and will not be passed on to third parties.

The editorial team is committed to maintaining this platform and hopes for your trust.

Best regards,

Frans van Heest, Michiel Bakker and Gijs Schooten
